The Dog Days of Summer plus ...

Hi, Reader,

You've probably heard of “the dog days of summer”, but do you know what that expression really means? Dogs are hu-man's best friend, loyal and loveable, but what do they have to do with summer?

Which days are the dog days? What do they have to do with dogs?

The phrase “dog days of summer” actually has nothing to do with our pups. It turns out that the ancient Greeks and Romans weren’t referring to real dogs, but to the great astronomical one, Sirius, the “Dog Star.” Located in the constellation Canis Major, it is the brightest star in the night sky.

Today, the precise dates vary by latitude, but the Old Farmer’s Almanac reports the traditional timing of the “dog days” in the United States is between July 3 and August 11. This period is traditionally tied to the dawn rising of Sirius, which was believed by ancient Greeks, Egyptians, and Romans to contribute to the sweltering temperatures of the season.

We've certainly been feeling extreme heat this year with record breaking temperatures around the country - and the world.

Sticking with the dog theme, and to contribute even more heat, August 5 is National "Work Like A Dog Day!"

It is well-known that dogs are hard workers. From sled dogs to guard dogs, sheepdogs to guide dogs, there are many different types of dog breeds that have instincts for specific types of work. They are great at what they do, and they can get pleasure from doing it as well. This is something that we can all learn from.

And from this Word Search puzzle dedicated to our faithful companions.

Will you spend today "working like a dog" to reach your goals, renew your motivation, and boost your productivity in all areas of your life? Whatever you do, try to be your most productive self. And be grateful for the hard workers who make our lives better, both human and canine varieties.

Til next, Be Memorable,

HI, Reader, If you've been receiving my mailings for a while, you know that I am always thrilled when October comes around, bringing it's delightfully crisp Fall weather and colorful signs of seasonal change. Okay, maybe not to Florida - that's why I make my annual pilgrimage to New York for foliage, family and friends. This year I'm heading north a bit earlier than usual, at the beginning rather than end of the month, because I can't wait to enjoy my favorite Autum activity, apple picking in...
